To learn more about USC benefits, access the "Working at USC" section on the Applicant Portal at Position Description Advertised Job Summary The faculty of the Department of Anthropology, in conjunction with the Linguistics Program at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus, invite applications for a 9-month, full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 16, 2026. Specifically, we seek applicants who specialize in linguistic anthropology. The Department of Anthropology will be the tenure home for this position, with teaching assignments serving both the Department of Anthropology and the Linguistics Program. The successful candidate must have and maintain an active and productive program of research that may include public scholarship in addition to demonstrating the potential for securing extramural funding that upholds USC’s reputation as a Research 1 university. They must be dynamic educators willing to teach large introductory undergraduate courses serving both general education and major requirements, as well as upper division and graduate courses in their area(s) of specialization. A typical teaching load in the Department of Anthropology is two courses per semester. They will also be expected to mentor graduate students in both anthropology and linguistics and participate in the administrative life of the department, the college, and the university. The Department of Anthropology is highly committed to both undergraduate and graduate instruction and mentoring, offering programs leading to bachelors, masters, and Ph.D. degrees. For more information about the Department, please visit The program provides students grounding in critical approaches to four-field anthropology (biological/biocultural anthropology, anthropological archaeology, cultural anthropology and linguistic anthropology). Linguistic anthropology figures prominently at USC due to a longstanding, collaborative relationship between the Department of Anthropology and the interdepartmental Linguistics Program. In fact, students may specialize in linguistic anthropology by taking graduate coursework in either program. Preferred Qualifications We seek applicants with experience grounded in ethnographic, collaborative, and community-based approaches to research that are founded in a commitment to social justice, and whose theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of language are innovative and synergistic with existing faculty expertise. Geographic area, research focus, and language(s) of specialization are open. This position allows for opportunities to collaborate across a broad group of partners, including colleagues in different disciplines, campus research institutes, and community partners.
